Multiculturalism as a policy is a very intelligent move for countries today. There are many advantages to going with the flow and not fighting the emergent trend of the global village. Multiculturalism is an invaluable resource because it enables a country to take advantage of the varied experiences, languages, cultures, skills, and points of view of its citizens. Multicultural countries have proven to enjoy capital and cultural gains from diversity. However, many argue that the policy of multiculturalism in Canada is tearing us apart. That the cultural mosaic that we are so proud of is a diverse group of cultures that mistrust and avoid each other. They further argue that we lack a national identity due to the fact that immigrants remain faithful to the old ties in their origin of birth. Although Canada has always enjoyed a varied composition of cultures and races, new immigration laws have resulted in mass immigration from people seeking refuge from tyranny, inequality, and poverty. Canada will become a whole created out of a thousand different pieces, held together by the policies of its people. Basically, they were willing to support diversity in Canada, as long as ethnic and racial groups stayed in "their place"; in other words as long as they remained the minority. Multiculturalism is a varied term in Canada. Does it weaken Canada?Canada has long been called "The Mosaic", due to the fact that it is made up of a variety of different races, cultures, and ethnicities. The policies will set forth an embrace of the concept of many cultures and instead of fear of change will make laws to increase diversity. Inevitable - global village however, it will not strengthen a country unless: There is a common goal shared by all citizens Each ethnic and racial group has equal opportunity There is positive interaction between racial and ethnic groupsMost people agree that an important first step in successfully joining multiple cultures is to develop an understanding of one another's backgrounds and unique experiences. It is no secret that Canada to date has been dominated by British and French descendants. One of the biggest steps forward in achieving an ethnically diverse country is the Canadian Multiculturalism Act. As more and more immigrants come to Canada and inter-racial relationships emerge, the population naturally becomes more diverse. Diversity builds strength, but it also can be hard to manage given the hate, that sometime results when inter-racial communities are mixed. Our country's sense of nationalism and identity is based in our attitudes toward multiculturalism.
