Capital Punishment and the Constitution

Capital Punishment and the Constitution Capital punishment is unconstitutional and does not deter crime. A government that continues to perform these terrible punishments has only one justification: that they are protecting its citizens. However, at the same time, the government is not following the constitution and acting as a hypocrite. The Constitution of the United States clearly states that nobody shall be subjected to cruel or unusual punishment. Supporters of the death penalty are quick to say that lethal injection is humane and neither cruel or unusual. However, most people do not know what is involved in lethal injection. Three injections are administered. The first injection is sodium pentothal to make the inmate unconscious. The next injection is pavulon, which paralyzes the muscles and stops breathing. Lastly, potassium chloride is injected to stop the heart. Observers cannot tell if the inmate is going through any pain at all. The injections that are given paralyze muscles. Most people on death row did not think that they would be put to death before they committed their crime. The state supplies a lawyer because everyone has the right for a fair trial. The eye for an eye passage is found in the Old Testament. The criminal is simply put to death. Only a life for a life, and only an eye for an eye, is what the passage is trying to get across. Most people that are on death row cannot afford a lawyer. If only the child dies it is less grave than if both the child and the mother died. We cannot limit the cost of capital punishment simply to money, since society has limited resources, and can only spend so much on criminal justice. Fire, smoke, and sparks spewed from his head.
