Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

If every woman from this day forward would choose NOT to drink alcohol

during pregnancy, we would never have another Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, or FAS, is a life long yet preventable set of

physical, mental and neurobehavioral birth defects brought on by the

consumption by the mother during pregnancy. Researchers don’t know yet

alcohol consumed by the father might affect the condition of the sperm

then affect the cell division and growth after conception. Fetal

Effect or FAE is a child born with the same symptoms as Fetal Alcohol

Syndrome. In contrast the only difference between Fetal Alcohol

children and Fetal Alcohol Effect is that FAE mothers were found to

drank smaller amounts of alcohol then the mothers of FAS. The

diagnosed Fetal Alcohol Syndrome about twenty years ago.

Fetal Alcohol Effects births are more common then Fetal Alcohol

both are very preventable diseases/disorders. There are .5 to 3 Fetal

Alcohol Syndrome births to every 1,000 normal births. That means there

between 1,200 and 8,800 babies born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in the

. . .

Many of the teens with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome fall farther behind their

peers, with math being especially difficult for them.

People don’t realize that the women most likely to give birth to

damaged

babies are NOT affected by the message directed at the middle class. Babies or children with FAS may even need surgery to fix some

of

the deformities such as their face, sex organs, and muscles. Many FAE children demand and expect immediate gratification;

they

always have to have their way and are willing to do anything to have

it.

Birth defects associated with prenatal alcohol exposure can occur in

the

first three to eight weeks of pregnancy, before a woman even knows that

she

is even pregnant. But the brain does most of its growing during the

last

thirteen weeks. They have mood swings,

which

can be passive and then withdrawn the next minute and switching to

violent

temper tantrums the next. Many of Fetal Alcohol Effect

people

have a spotty memory, they can remember something from one year ago,

but not

something from the other day or yesterday.

The damage that the alcohol does to the brain is long term and cannot

be

fixed.

Growth deficiency is one of the most common physical defects of Fetal

Alcohol Syndrome. FAS children need structure,

need

set limits, and always need someone watching them. They are also

friendly and out going.

Many of these children have a hard time staying focused on a task.
