Terror. A word that no one takes lightly. It is instilled into the hearts and minds of the innocent, for what? A message, a political viewpoint expressed by taking another human life. And sweeping right in behind this tragedy, this act of terrorism, is the ever present media, which only fuels the flames of destruction even higher. Terrorism is a major problem in facing our society. Even though it has been around since people's ideals have been oppressed, still no one listens and everyone fears it. The best way to end terrorism is by understanding the reasons behind it, ending publicity for it, and increasing security measures for it. To understand terrorism one has to realize that it can occur at any moment, but it will most likely happen when least expected. To uncover the true cause of terrorism, involves identifying motive and personalities of those "terrorizing". Today, our society, not only America, as well as the rest of the world, is frightened by domestic and international terrorists for their ability to reach the innocent. The media inspires more terrorist acts to happen, causes the acts to be bigger, and more destructive. Terrorists stage an event that will gain news coverage and then try to get their views publicized by threatening drastic actions. They left a 12 -foot banner hanging from the interstate at the time of the fires that read: "If you build it, We will burn it. "It is generally intended to intimidate or coerce a governments, individuals or groups to modify their behavior or policies (The Vice President's Task Force on Combating Terrorism). "(Hunt,2-3) Violence is its main tool in obtaining this change. This is caused mostly because the actual acts of terrorism usually receive more media attention than the punishment, and/or results. And we all know of Al-Qaeda, whose goals are to establish a pan-Islamic Caliphate Throughout the world by working with allied extremist groups to overthrow regimes it deems "non-Islamic", by expelling Westerners and non-Muslims from Muslim countries. (Thomas, 35) Most media stations have "voluntary guidelines" that their reporters should follow to avoid the many problems they cause. There is a different group for just about every different viewpoint in the world. There is also the Al-Jihad, who wants to overthrow the Egyptian government, and replace it with an Islamic state, by attacking U. They are ,after all, in our own borders, and very close to home. This country is an easy place for terrorists to gain their much needed media exposure.
