Catholic Church

In the sixteenth century, the Catholic Church was protested. This protest of the church is called the protestant reformation. The Protestant reformation can be defined as the beginning of a new religious outlook. The Renaissance sparked the beginning of the reformation by revitlizing European intellectual life. This also got rid of midievil obsession with theology. The Protestant reformation started in1517 by Martin Lut


Lutherans believe in consubstantiation, which is that the wine and bread are symbolic of God's body and blood. Feudal society ended and a new society began to grow. The reformation rejected ideas of the renaissance. This actually started the Protestant reformation. However the reformation rejected the renaissance because it brought religion back into the culture and made it easier to be a part of. This rebellion was started when Luther became outraged at the selling of Indulgences. The Protestant reformation can be charactorized by the beginning of capitalism, an increase in individual roles. He wrote a document stating ninety-five thesis against the selling of indulgences. The renaissance followed Catholic beliefs while the reformation believed in humanism and the role the individual. Catholics believe in transubstantiation or the actual changing of the wine and bread to God's body and blood. After a public debate in 1519, Luther decides to break away from catholicism and begin his own religion called lutheranism. There was a large increase in middle class, and a Decline of the Catholic Church. Luther believed that all you needed was a simple faith in god to go to heaven.
