Changes Throughout Society
Drama has made many changes throughout its existence and has helped to shape many different societies in many different ways. Drama began with ancient drama, worked its way up to medieval drama; now has crawled its way up to modern and contemporary drama and beyond. Today, drama of all structures are enjoyed leisurely and also for education purposes. Along the way drama has taken many forms, and the ability to illustrate different issues, classes, joys, and tragedies. Drama has changed even from the Shakespearean age and now has classifications such as romanticism, realism, and naturalism. For example, look at the differences between play's such as A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare and Hedda Galber by Henrik Ibsen. These two plays portray many differences in context in contrasting from then to now and also; at the same time, they show many similarities between the individual characters. From the Shakespearean age, with the play A Midsummer Night's Dream, it takes on the traditional ways of having the male gender be the dominating and manipulating figure in the story. Egeus, Hermia's father, seems to possess many evils. Evils such as having control over whom his daughter, Her
Realism is illustrated very well in Hedda Gabler. Through her words, conversation, and actions she is even successfully able to make a reformed alcoholic drink again. Hedda is constantly after power in this play. After Hedda offers Lovborg a drink and he refuses, she says "Poor little me! So I have no power over you at all?" Lovborg then replies with "Not about that. Hedda is the dominating and manipulating character in this particular play, something that plays are not used to exposing. Oberon, Egeus, and Theseus all have much dictatorship over the rest of the community in which they live. This play takes place in a modern day setting as apposed the magical woods setting that is demonstrated in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Realism, which stemmed from Romanticism, begins to show how life really was. "What say you, Hermia? Be advised, fair maid;To you your father should be as god;One that composed your beauties, yes and oneTo whom you are but as a form in waxBy him imprinted and within his powerTo leave the figure or disfigure it. " (273)In this play it is the males who show the dominating characteristics but in other plays, such as Hedda Gabler, it is the woman, who has all the manipulation abilities and denominating characteristics. As a rule, the woman was told what to do and when to do it. Characters such as Oberon, applies manipulation techniques, which are performed by his fairy friend, Puck.
