Club Drugs

             For my outside assignment I attended the presentation by Ms. Trinka Porrata. Ms. Porrata is a retired narcotics detective spending twenty-five years on the LAPD, eight of those years being part of the narcotics division. Ms. Porrata has a specialized area of knowledge of the "Club Drugs". She informed us (the audience) that the "rave" culture that is spreading throughout the youth of America is an enormous problem.
             These so called "raves" are all night dance festivals where the majority of the attendees are on drugs. The ages of the kids that come to these illegal underground events rage anywhere from twelve to twenty-five years of age. At these parties there is a tremendous amount of peer pressure to take these drugs. The drugs that I am referring to are ecstasy, GHB, LSD, hallucinogenic mushrooms, ketamine and nitrous oxide. This is just a short list of some of the many, many different drugs found at raves. Most of these drugs give the person a hallucinogenic feeling, putting them almost in a totally different world than reality.
             Another major component of these parties is the abundance of flashing lights. These lights are usually extremely bright and are carelessly put right up next to the eyes for the "sensations" it gives these drugged up kids. It has been proven that exposure to lights of this degree of brightness that they have so close to their eyes does severe damage. This is not the most alarming corruption of their bodies that these kids do to themselves.
             Obviously, the drugs used at these parties are extremely harmful to ones health. For instance ketamine is a cat tranquilizer, GHB is short for Gamma Hydroxy Butane, and ecstasy is a formally approved drug by the FDA.
