It is often necessary for organizations (such as schools) to categorize clubs andactivities for administrative purposes. Many people in Congress believe cheerleaders should not be considered athletes. Cheerleaders are expected to build school support and spirit for athletic teams,plus set standards of behavior and scholarship for the student body. Therefore, cheerleadingprograms that are excluded may not be subject to such complicated and bothersome rules. If a cheerleading squad cannot cooperate, stunts cannot be done safely andaccurately and people get hurt. (Vedantam 14) Another one of the major reasons cheerleading is not considered an athletic sport isbecause those, such as coaches and faculty administrators, who oppose the acceptance ofcheerleading programs into athletic departments are not informed of what cheerleading actuallyconsists of. Rather, each competitorperforms on her on and is then compared to other competitors to determine a winner. (Nelson 13) We know that a sport has to bemore than just physical activity. The word "game" means that there is some type of structure orpurpose. (Vedantam 14) Cheerleading has the strength and guts offootball, the gracefulness and balance of gymnastics, and the performing aspects of figureskating. Enthusiasts say competitive cheer offers the challenge ofgymnastics without the austerity. Cheerleading buildscharacter along with the development of communication skills.
