Gun control

             Gun control is a continuing debate. Many people believe in the right to bear arms and don't agree with gun control laws. Gun control laws are necessary in the United States to prevent shooting or injuries from firearms and to protect the citizens.
             Gun Control is a matter of federal, state, and local legislation. In 1994, Congress passed what has been regarded as the most comprehensive effort of national gun control, the Brady Bill. In 1981, Jim Brady was shot in the head during an assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan. Brady was a dedicated father and husband who loved his job as press secretary to the president and was earning respect from the people of Washington. Many believed he was dead. Luckily he survived and is on a long road to recovery.
             After the scare his wife Sarah Brady got more involved with gun control. She wanted stricter access to handguns to prevent such shootings. The Brady Bill required a national five day waiting period and background checks for all individuals before they could buy a handgun. Jim and Sarah often speak to the State and Local legislators in hopes to further gun control and to inform the American people.
             Guns are also regulated by the State and Local legislation. Some regulatory issues are "one handgun a month" laws and ban on "Saturday night specials" and other "junk guns". Virginia is one of four states that have a law limiting legal purchases of handguns to one a month per buyer. "Saturday night specials" are small easily concealed lightweight guns which are appealing to criminals because of their portability.
