In 1980 China remained helpless in its attempt to acquire American imports due to the lack of hard currency. China had found itself in a tough situation. According to Sheils, it wasn’t just the citizens that couldn’t afford a 60-cent Coke, cosmetics, or dietary supplements, but the larger industries, in addition to, that couldn’t afford the equipment needed to improve their industries for export purposes (10-11). Altman explains, the Chinese had also found their way into joint ventures with Americans, mainly for manufacturing purposes; they went it on such products together from electronics to Jeeps (21). American technology was in demand and that meant that there had to be money to spend (18). For such a drastic improvement to have taken place in China money had to be the route of it. Money was expected to pour in as the show made its way from San Francisco, Chicago and eventually New York. China was just being introduced to the American stock market from the IBM Corporation and they seemed intrigued and eager to learn more (Altman 20). China was in a good situation in 1985, they finally had opened up a small portion of their resources and good things were in sight. Japan, China’s number one trading partner began teaching Mandarin, the Chinese national language, in an effort to produce more trade (Altman 18). the process of correcting what was a bad situation before. From a visual perspective China seemed to be getting its act together. China was now expanding vertically, high-rises being put up everywhere with tall cranes swinging overhead (Altman 18). China had found their niche and all they had to do was keep expanding. It wasn’t uncommon for an American to have to pay anywhere from two to six thousand dollars a month for a small apartment, and do to the large amount of foreign business apartment buildings were constantly being built (Altman 21-22). China had found its way into the middle of things instead of just looking in. With all the business America was doing in China, Americans needed places to stay and these places didn’t come cheap due to the lack of apartments.
