Chinese Exclusion Act

Between the years of 1860 and 1960, there was a massive income of immigrants to the United States. These immigrants we a huge chunk of the labor population and there fore were the backbones of our labor supply. We surely owe them many thanks because they helped to build the U.S. we are in today. Immigrants come to America to get every kind of freedom and have a job so they can make more

money to pursue a better life. But after the depression of 1873, unemployment mounted on the West

coast and native-born workers found it necessary to limit the number of immigrants to create available

job positions at wages that allow them continue to feed their family.

The Burlingame Treaty of 1868 stated that Chinese People had the right to come to migrate to

America for any particular reason. Most of the Chinese decided to come to America because they were

hoping to share all the opportunities that America had to offer. It was all well and accepted by

Americans for Chinese People to immigrate to America because they were willing to take the hardest

and the least attractive jobs. But due to the depression in 1873, American People couldn't afford to be

picky about a job, they were desperate for any job. However,

. . .

Those same disgruntled workers managed to also influence the congress to pass the Exclusion act

of 1879. at any cost because they lived in poverty in China but America had to offer a lot of economical

opportunities. This Act stayed in law intil 1943 however, many other laws were created in order to

calm down worker demands and maintain peace among laborers. Although the act

negatively influenced the lives of Chinese People, it helped to ease the unemployment rate. Many discriminations started to take place against the Chinese. Propaganda such as cartoons and slogans raised tensions even more because it pictured

a Chinese Immigrant as a thief who stole the American's jobs. As it was

also intended to, the Chinese Exclusion Act significantly decreased the Chinese Population in America.

The absence of Chinese Workers didn't stop other foreigners from entering the country and help

transform the U. They attacked and killed

some Chinese people and destroyed their property. President Hayes was one of the major oppositions to the bill because it directly violated the

Burlingame Treaty of 1868. Since the Chinese Exclusion

Act was only meant to limit Chinese Migration, millions of immigrants continued to come to America. A good example would be in today's war against the Taliban, Pakistan couldn't

say no to having troops land in Pakistan because of political opposition from big power countries such

as the U.
