Civil War
The American Civil War was a war fought within the United States of America between the North (Union) and the South (Confederacy) starting in 1861 and ending in 1865. This war was one of the most destructive events in American history, costing more than 600,000 lives. It was thought to be one that helped shape American citizens from then on. From the Southern point of view, this war was a War for Southern Independence. From the Northern point of view is was seen as a revolution. The Civil War started as a result of many years of differences between the North and South. Between the North and South there lay economic, social and political differences, but what tied all these together was slavery. From the economic stand point the South depended on agriculture rather than industrialization . The South was able to produce most of the worlds cotton which increased there need for the plantation system and there need for slaves. On
The South opposed high tax as the North welcomed high taxes to protect its products from cheap foreign competition. They feared each others political goals. Which the South wanted for farming where the North wanted to expand industrially. Much of the south was dependent on slavery and was accustomed to this way of life. Where as the North found alternate ways of getting their work done. The north depended on factories and other industrialized businesses. The North was not about to break up the nation and give up the South. Without this war who knows what would have happened to the United States, but because of a few strong believers who felt slavery was immoral, we are where we are. The South was very depended on the slaves to help them carry out their everyday lives. Looking at the causes of the War from a Social view the South was slave based in which they followed a class system. They both had interest in expanded westward and were in competition for land. Where as the North had the immigrants to help work in the factories and did not have such a of class system. Expanding westward would not only help each side economically, socially, but also politically. Also, both had different views on how the government should operate.
