My Visit To The National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. and the on-line versionThis past week I went downtown to Washington, DC to visit and tour the Museum of Natural History. The purpose of this visit was to learn more about our civilization. While at the museum I learned that they also offer an on-line tour as well. So I took advantage of both the on-site tour and the on-line tour.What I learned during these tours is that the Sumerians, Egyptians, Persians, Israelites, Greeks, Romans, Celts played a part in the growth of our western civilization. The exhibit talks about the accomplishments made.About twelve thousand years ago in western Asia, northern Africa and Europe, people shifted their way of life from hunting to farming, from camp to village and city. These changes led to the emergence of the state and the basic political form that governs our lives today.The first exhibit I saw was a group of hunter-gatherers inhabited in France's Lascaux Cave
However, the on-line version I found to be very limited and not nearly has complete and interesting, its well worth your time to visit the museum in Washington, DC. The people who lived in Europe, southwestern Asia, and northern Africa were in every way our physical and intellectual equals. Urban life emerged in southwestern Asia prior to 3000 BC and fostered a new form of political organization referred to or called the state. The remains of their art, tools, and habitations are evidence of a growing complexity of human affairs. These developments may have been brought about by alterations in climate or growth in population. I also learned that the life of big game hunters consisted of finding and killing big game animals. The government manages power to maintain public order and to sustain economic network. The unique feature of the state is government, which was an elaborate bureaucracy run by elite social classes. Reindeer and horses were primary game animals, but bones of other large deer or cattle, as well as cave bear, have also been found. Sometime between 7000 and 3000 BC, farming as a way of life spread to areas well beyond the Near East. For example on page 25 of Book 1, a similar if not the same picture is provided of the mummy coffins. Farmers and city dwellers were ruled by the kings of the cities and the priests of the temples. They domesticated animals, planted crops and settled in more permanent communities of small mud-brick or stone houses. I was also surprised by how much our book has covered these topics.
