Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is known to be one of the world's greatest orators. His incredible speaking ability enabled him to effectively express the demands of African Americans for social justice. Inspired by the belief that love and peaceful protest could eliminate social injustice, Martin Luther King, Jr., became one of the outstanding black leaders in the United States. Many historic moments in the civil rights struggle have been used to identify him, for example he was the prime mover of the Montgomery bus boycott, keynote speaker at the March on Washington, youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate, etc. But in retrospect, single events are less important than the fact that King, and his policy of nonviolent protest, was the dominant force in the civil rights movement during its decade of greatest achievement, from 1957 to 1968. Dr. King fought passionately for what he believed in. He went through a struggle of racism and segregation all his life, up to the day he died in cold blood. Segregation started some time ago in 1896 with a court case called Plessy vs. Ferguson the quote "separate but equal" emerged at this time. As newly appointed president of the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) Dr. " King stresses that this is not just a problem for the black community, but for all Americans. was a man of great honor, extraordinary insight, intelligence, wisdom, and integrity. Lincoln's Emancipation Declaration promised freedom for slaves, but "the Negro is still not free" and further liberation and rights are necessary. King uses the words of "My country, 'tis of thee" to stress the national, even patriotic importance of the struggle, repeating the line "Let freedom ring" to link the civil rights struggle with the ideals of the founding fathers. They sat down at the "whites only" lunch counter and ordered soda, doughnuts, and coffee. "Attitude is a concept developed by researchers to describe some of the mental processes and behaviors of human beings". King among many other black leaders tried to convince the American people to not resist the demands of their time and energy or their feeling of being powerless. They came from almost every state in the union; they came in every form of transportation; they gave up from one to three days' pay plus the cost of transportation, which for many was a heavy financial sacrifice. In December of 1955 in Montgomery Alabama, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat at the front of the "colored section" of a bus to a white passenger, defying a southern custom of that time.
