Traffic crashes are the number one killer of people under the age of 32 and take more young lives than all types of crime combined. In 1996 more than 1,500 people lost their lives from traffic crashes on Michigan roadways, and nearly 60% ofthose who died were not wearing safety belts! ( Yates, 84 & 85). Buckling up is such a simple thing to do, it only takes two seconds to buckle up, and no other single action has as much life-saving potential. The opposing side of wearing seat belts say that a standard safety belt law infringes on freedom of choice. They say it infringes on freedom of choice because they should decide whether on not they should wear seat belts. The opposing side feels that if the police give out tickets for not wearing a seat belt then they are going

When all is said and done, it pays to remember that seatbelts were designed with your safety and security in mind. If it is not properly worn you can be ticketed. Seatbelts, like safety can make a life-and-death difference if you or your loved ones are involved in an automobile accident. When wearing a seat belt in a roll over the seat belt keeps the occupant in the seat, rather then hitting the roof of vehicle and causing neck and back injuries or even fatality. A standard safety belt law is no more intrusive of your personal freedom than any other law. Buckling up is such a simple and easy process and it only takes two seconds to buckle up, and no other single action has as much life-saving potential. There are also financial considerations to be examined. Amongcrashes in which a fatality occurred in 1998, only 1% of restrained passenger car occupants were ejected, compared to 21% of unrestrained occupants. Direct costs that involve crashes where the occupants were not wearing seatbelts average $5,000 more per crash than those involving occupants who were wearing their belts. If more adults were inclined to wear their safety belts, their kids would too.
