Lunges, push-ups, jumping drills, defensive slides, and sprints are all essential to basketball. Never get a child hating practice because he might not give it his best effort. Also show them the correct way to pass the ball. Everybody plays better when there having fun. For Defense, you should show them the proper defensive stance, ball side help, defensive slide, rebounding, and the difference between man and zone defenses. Defense is hard to teach kids because to most it is not as fun as offense. Set out rules for them to follow like pass the ball three times before you shoot, all shots must be inside the paint, and make two-handed passes. Conditioning is best when it is done between drills but can also be a means of deciplin. Conditioning is probably the easiest part of coaching. This is also a good way to create hustle and determination. Or the way that I used was too incorporate scrimmaging with the drills. This can be done in several different ways.
