Field Trip
Picasso was experimenting with displacing and distorting shapes to show all angles of the figure in his painting. He painted recognizable objects in deformed, wavy shapes to show the unconscious. Picasso had painted a picture of a man and distorted it by separating the parts of his human figure, whereas Kadinsky created a scene like the cannons and buildings and distorted it. Magritte's paintings are different than Dali's paintings, because Dali made figures in deformed shapes, whereas as Magritte painted real figures in their real shapes, but they were shown in ways that would never happen. Surrealism was influenced by Freudian psychology and tried to explore the world of the unconscious. Picasso took an object and distorted it, while Kandinsky made an object and distorted it. There was also an army carrying a red flag, which resembled the Red Army of the Communist Party, which was a major issue during this time period. Dali used a large area with wavy figures resembling real figures like humans to show the idea that the painting was much like a dream. After and during the wars there was a revival in religion, which is shown in the crucifixion in the center of the painting. Kadinsky's placement of color was also more random and had less pattern than Picasso. Things like a train coming out of a fireplace showed the idea of making real looking figures out of place with reality.
