Wake Up

             Almost everyone consumes some form of caffeine in the morning to help him or herself wake up. That first jolt increases the feeling of alertness, stimulates the brain, and gives an initial burst of energy. The question is, do you really need it? Caffeine is the world's most popular legal drug. It is considered a stimulant that focuses on the central nervous system; giving such desirable feeling that many people crave more than is healthy. Excessive consumption can have adverse effects on the human body, such as sleep disturbance, decreased fine motor coordination, and a false sense of alertness just to name a few. Most caffeine users ignore or alibi the warning signs because they enjoy the feeling caffeine gives them or dread the discomfort of the withdrawal symptoms. The consumption of caffeine eventually leads to the feeling of needing more caffeine. It creates a circle of need in spite of the adverse effects.
             Most caffeine consumers use it to achieve a sense of alertness. This enhanced feeling of wakefulness is due to stimulation of the cerebral cortex of the brain. The body's metabolism increases, respiration speeds up, and the level of fatty acids in the blood increases giving more energy. Caffeine releases more stress hormones into the blood stream, preventing the body from relaxing and inducing a false sense of alertness. Consumption of seventy-five milligrams of caffeine elevates the neural activity of the brain, delays tiredness, increases alertness in the performance of simple intellectual tasks, and extends endurance while doing physical labor. The heightened sense of alertness can begin as soon as five minutes to a half an hour and last up to several hours. The feeling then wears off and the person feels sluggish again, requiring more caffeine to shake it off.
