Well Lighted Place

             The short story "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" by Ernest Hemingway shows us how important it is to understand our elders and the things in life that we should all be grateful for.
             This story shows us how younger people view life and how time is spent compared to our elders. In the story the younger waiter is the café wants to hurry up and get home to be with his wife. The line "He's lonely. I'm not lonely. I have a wife waiting for me in bed."
             Tells me that the younger man with the wife is happy at home and has somewhere to go that is clean and where people love him. When this is read after the title A Clean Well-lighted Place, the wife and house of the young waiter is the important things in life that he has to look forward to. That is why he wants to hurry home and is impatient.
             The old man in the story who wants to keep drinking is a very different person compared to the younger waiter. He has tried to kill himself and the only place that we know of that he seems happy to go is the café. The café is a place that is clean and is available late in the night with plenty of light. At this point in life for the old man, there does not seem much for him to do but drink since the family that he has won't let him commit suicide. Going to a clean place that is quiet and peaceful like the café is his only other option.
             I believe the older unhurried waiter can relate more to the old man who drinks all the time. The older waiter says, "No. I have never had confidence and I am not young."... "Each night I am reluctant to close up because there may be some one who needs the cafe." The older waiter shows us patience and understanding of those who need place to be open late at night.
