Adult Learning Styles

             Adult learning is a way to separate the way adults learn from the way children learn. There are many assumptions about adult learning such as adults are self-directed, they are goal oriented, adults are relevancy oriented, they are practical and problem-solvers and adults have accumulated life experiences. In practical terms, this means that instructors for adults need to focus more on the process and less on the content being taught. Adults have other motivational factors for learning than children do. Adults learn in order to make or maintain social relationships, to meet external expectations – such as a boss requiring them to upgrade their job skills, to learn how to better serve others, for professional advancement, adults use learning as a form of escape or stimulation, and for pure interest in what they decide to learn about. Adults also have different barriers that make learning difficult. Some potential barriers might include other responsibilities (families, careers), lack of time, money and childcare, scheduling and/or transportation problems, and low confidence.
             Learning style is simply the way you process information. There are different styles of learning that people use, and they are the visual style (sight), the auditory style (sound), and the kinesthetic/tactile/manipulative (body, sensation, motion) style. Parents tend to prefer a different type of learning style that their child, so the parents should know and understand their own learning style. Visual learners learn by watching and they see the images of what they learn in their heads. Forty percent of students fall into this category of learning. Next, there are the auditory learners, who tend to spell phonetically, and can have trouble reading because they don't visualize well.
