Classifications of a Hero

             Heroes posses qualities that many people strive to achieve throughout the course of their lives. "True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to server others whatever the cost." Humbly serving others, heroes directly impact the lives of people in their tenacious struggle for the common good.
             Few services are more humble than working with the down trodden people in our world. Mother Theresa performed this service, she asked for nothing and gave everything. Bharati Mukherjee, a journalist for time magazine wrote an article in which Mother Theresa was held up as one of the 100 greatest heroes of our time. "In fighting for the dignity of the destitute in a foreign land, she gave the world a moral example that bridged divides of culture, class and religion" stated Bharati. Time magazine is not the only organization to recognize Mother Theresa as a hero. The catholic church is in the process of her beatifacation, she will soon become a saint. Mother Theresa started her service when she met a half dying woman in a hospital bed in Calcutta, India. From then on she devoted herself completely to serving the poor. She became know as "The Saint of the Gutters", and in 1979 won the nobel peace prize.
             Back in the 1930's and 1940's one did not have to travel to another country to find down trodden people. In a land where there were separate drinking fountains, separate schools, and separate restuarants, one man endured incredible hardship in an effort to help break down the color barrier. Jackie Robinson did not march, he did not picket, he simply played baseball. Yet Jackie seemed larger than life, and as the first African American player in the major leagues Jackie drew all sorts of attention.
