Although the French Revolution was a huge turning point in European politics andset the foundation for changes ahead, there are many misfortunes that came from it. TheNational Guard, the Paris Commune, the September Massacre, are all words that theFrench would prefer us not to hear. These events were a subtle denouement to a climaxthat was filled with both blood and pain. The Reign of Terror, or the Great Terror, was amassive culmination to the horror of the French Revolution, the gutters flowing withblood as the people of Paris watched with an entertained eye. The power at the time of theGreat Terror was in the hands of a newly formed Public Safety Commission headed byRobespierre. Another influential member of the nine man committee was a lawyer,
The war of a political nature raged silently in France, as the different factions ofthe Convention dared not fight openly. Herbert and hisfollowers were put to the guillotine March 14th, 1794. Great changes were taking place and the country was still trying out their newform of government. Upon returning to Paris from foreign duties,Danton immediately took the side of Robespierre, condemning the Enrages' and theHebertists, who were behind much of the over killing. The Reign of Terror is just the culmination to the bloodlines and the atrocities ofthe French Revolution. Between these two men theresponsibility of many deaths during the Great Terror lies. The death of thousands was notrestricted to the lower classes, all men despite social stature were in danger of going to theguillotine, even clergy. As for Danton, he had made many powerful enemies, all of which ardently spokeout against him. On April 3rd, he and his close supporters weresent to the guillotine, and were put under the blade. Street names were changed, a new calendar was introduced, andthe abolishment of the church, though this did not last. Inconclusion, the Reign of Terror was the climax of this terrible Revolution. The violenceand paranoia of the sans culottes, the lust for political power in the convention, and thepetty differences of one person to another finally reached a head, exploding into a massexecution. People addressed each other as citizen _______, with the idea ofone another being fellow citizens of the republic. When they planned a coupe to revolt, this gavethe Committee its final nail, and drove it into the coffin of the Hebertists.
