Rape is defined as forcibly having sexual intercourse with someone, most likely a woman. "It is one of the most loathed, misunderstood, and frightening crimes." (Siegel 326). A lot of people don't understand the logistics of rape. There are different kinds of rape and rapists. This paper will address 2 different types of rape and two different kinds of rapists. It will also discuss what to do if you or someone you know is raped, the statistics, and the punishment of a rape. The first type of rape is called a non-traditional rape, which is committed by an acquaintance of the victim. The majority of rapes are acquaintance rape. This can best be described as date rape. In more than three-quarters of rape cases, the victim knows her rapist. The second type of rape is called violent rape. This is the perfect example of a date rape. You should also take precautions while in your car. This can be committed by a stranger or by an acquaintance. Part of the problem is that acquaintance rape has doubled in the last ten years. As a result, juries are often unwilling to convict date rapist because the woman went with him willingly. There are rape crisis centers all over the United States to help with counseling after an attack. If you are sexually assaulted, stay calm and do anything possible to get away from the attacker without putting yourself in anymore danger. "Because many women who have been sexually assaulted refuse to go to the police, rapists have a good chance of getting away with it" (The Economist). Also, don't shower or change clothes, you should have a medical and a gynecological exam to preserve any evidence.
