             The interaction between Paulina and Gerardo symbolizes the conflict between the present government/society in Chile trying to function with the horrible injustice and oppression of the past that have not been righted or even come to terms with. In this interchange Gerardo represents the present system, and Paulina represents the past he is forced to deal with. Paulina is a victim, and therefore has stayed rooted in the past. Gerardo was never truly victimized so he exists more fully in the present. This is evident throughout the play.
