East of Eden

In the novel, East of Eden by John Steinbeck, Catherine Ames is one of the maincharacters. She is introduced to the reader as a monster and as time goes on, shepossesses both monster like and animal qualities and hurts many people. AsCatherine she gets older and wiser, she gets more evil and displays her monster andanimal like characteristics. She knows she is powerful and indestructible by virtually anybody. She has manipulated and tricked many people in her life causing them togo to the extreme... death, only someone nonhuman could be so controlling overalmost everybody. Catherine "Cathy" shows her evilness and her monster likebehavior in many scenes throughout the book and she brings more character andexcitement to the book. Steinbeck illustrates Cathy as being a monster , "I believethere are monsters born in the world" ( Steinbeck 72) Steinbeck also says, " It is mybelief that Cathy Ames was born with the tendencies, or lack of them, which droveand forced her all of her life," (Steinbeck page 72). Cathy knew how to use thesepowers to her advantage, she got everything that she wanted from using thesepowers. Cathy used this to her advantage also by making people uneasy, but not so
