Difference between Pentium II & Pentium III
The purpose of this memo is to evaluate the difference between a Pentium II processor and a Pentium III processor. In addition, this memo will tell if · Pentium II and Pentium IIIs level of cache memory to determine witch is "better or faster" for the company's needs.· Which Cpu is desired for system boosting and will it help · Pentium II can upgrade to the Pentium III.What's the difference between the Pentium II and Pentium III?The differences between the Celeron and Pentium III processors can be confusing. In addition, the Celeron chip got bad reviews when it first was introduced in 1998, and that impression has stuck in the minds of many people even though the problem was fixed by Intel in later releases of the chip. Here are the most important differences between the Pentium III and the Celeron chips coming out today: · The Celeron chip is based on a Pentium II core while Pentium III chips are based, as you would expect, on a Pentium III core. The Pentium III core contains an enhanced instruction set and has some pipelining improvements that give it slightly better performance on normal instructions. The enhanced instruction set is only useful to programs specially coded to take advantage of it,
Will it really boost my system?· Only programs that use SIMD and KNI instructions will be faster. Conclusion and SolutionThe only problem is to make a decision on which product/ processors to purchase. Unfortunately, the upgrade is only possible for systems with a BX chipset (mostly: Pentium II 350 - 450MHz). Special patched will be released for Windows 98, downloadable from the Intel and Microsoft website. · The Pentium III will have speeds from 450 till 800MHz. The first Celerons had no cache and this hurt their performance and gave them bad reviews early-on. Only the regular use of patches for games is sometimes a bit annoying. Current games in graphical applications often have support for these instructions, but 3DNow is not a standard is gaming scene. From that we can conclude that there really in an advantage from new 3D instructions. · Some Pentium III chips support faster system bus speeds than Celeron chips do. The first versions of the Pentium III (450 & 500MHz) will fit on a Pentium II motherboard, by using a BIOS upgrade. Unfortunately that doesn't sound like fully optimized games. Ofcourse it cannot be 100% guaranteed that the Pentium III will work on any BX motherboard, as the manufacturers have made it, based on the Pentium II. For example, the fastest Pentium IIIs might be 200 MHz (40%) faster than the fastest Celeron chips. AMD will compete with 3DNow and Cyrix can wait a few months, doubting if it will support 3DNow or KNI, or many both, in their 'Jalapeno' 7th generation core.
