Holes

"My No-Good-Dirty-Rotten-Pig-Stealing-Great-Great Grandfather, that's why I'm here!" replies Stanley Yelnats when asked why he was sent to Camp Green Lake. Stanley's life was always bringing about problems nothing ever went right for him and his family. Every time things liked like they were about to go good something would ruin it. In the book Holes, Stanley gets sentenced to Camp Green Lake for a crime he didn't commit, during his stay at the camp Stanley will learn a little bit about friendship and courage.

When Stanley first arrives at the camp he meet's the boys he is going to be digging his holes with, the kids from tent D. Zero is the one kid that Stanley starts to get close with, Zero is the quietest of all the others and he comes to Stanley a proposition.
Zero wants Stanley to help him learn how to read, at first Stanley doesn't oblige because he gets too tired after digging his hole he doesn't have the energy to teach him. After a few days Stanley feels sorry for Zero because all he wants to become literate so he can prove to people that he's dumb, Stanley agrees to help Zero as long as Zero keeps up his part in digging half of Stanley's hole every day, but this only brings him more trouble.

Back at home Stanley was a real skittish boy, not only the kids but even the teachers were mean to him at school, this changed at Camp Green Lake. Because Zero was digging part of Stanley's Hole the other boys were getting mad, they felt as if though Stanley was treating Zero as a slave. When one of the boys confronted him Stanley got mad and for once he finally stuck up for himself. He was getting the courage he never had, due to the fact he had nobody here there was no family to back him up and all his decisions had a little courage in them more than when he was back home. One of the biggest decisions Stanley made was to run away from camp and find Zero.
