Huck and Jim: Friends or Foes?
Throughout The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the relationship between Huck and Jim has drastically changed from Huck thinking of Jim as property to Huck considering Jim a very dear friend. At first, Huck only thought of Jim as a piece of property that one could own. He didn't consider his feelings. "Tom said he slipped Jim's hat off of his head and hung it on a limb right over him. Afterward Jim said the witches bewitched him (8). Huck thought it was acceptable to treat Jim like he didn't have any feelings or fears. The only thing Huck was worried about was himself. They didn't feel the need to treat Jim as a human being, and show him respect. He took after the way his father thought. Pap said, "There was a free [slave] there. Many of their views of each other have changed, but for the better. This was Huck's fault because he put a dead snake at the foot of Jim's blanket. Huck told some men, "I won't let no run away [slaves] get by me if I can help it" (122). He didn't want Jim to think badly of him. He is very close minded at this point. When Huck first saw Jim on the island he was glad to see him. So, they got to experience things together. Huck is battling society and the views of society, but he goes through this because he cares about Jim. When Huck was on land he would witness unmoral acts. Huck was very concerned about Jim finding this out. This brings them closer and strengthens their relationship. As time passes by, Huck and Jim become closer friends who care about each other. This scared him so he thought there was not a better place to live that on a raft. Many things contributed to Huck and Jim's bond with each other.
