By definition, attachment is the process by which an infant forms a strong emotional tie to a caregiver. So, what is attachment? If a person were to tell another individual that attachment only took place when in the infancy stage, most would find this hard to comprehend. Attachment with human beings continues throughout life. Strong emotional ties are always a significant factor in a person's life from the time they are born, until they are laid to rest. These emotional ties can be the result of certain environmental factors, personal experiences, or an individuals need to create an attachment with someone or something to feel a sense of purpose.
             So the first question that is asked is whether or not attachment and emotional ties have anything to do with genetics or immediate family influence. Two major studies that have been conducted in accordance with this question are the Twin Study and the Adoption Study. In the twin study, fraternal and identical twins were compared as to whether or not each set of twins shared many of the same hereditary traits. It is believed that identical twins would share more of the same traits due to the fact that they share the same genotype. On the same note, during the adoption study, an example of identical twins separated at birth and reared in separate different environments still shared some of the same traits. The basic concept within both studies is the idea of Nature v. Nurture. Recent research has also concluded that approximately one half of all behavioral characteristics can be linked with the factor of genetics. All of these concepts have a great deal of influence on attachment because a persons behavior, environmental factors, genetics, and family influences all have been attributed to forming an individuals view on attachment and how he or she will react to attachment and bonding.
