Beowulf vs Gawain
Essay Question: Compare the qualities of Beowulf and those of Sir Gawain The life story of Beowulf and Sir Gawain were both that of courageous warriors who both shared similar characteristics in their use of strength in battle as well as respect for their fellow man. Although they both held different societal positions, with Beowulf being heir to a kingdom, and Sir Gawain a knight who serves his kingdom, they both equally played a large part in the survival of their land. The actions of both men show how one man can have an effect on a people and cause fear or respect just by the mention of their name. In his youth, Beowulf is a great warrior, known mainly by his triumphs in battle his constant displays of courage, as well as his competitiveness, such as his famous swimming match against Breca. Instead of rushing to the throne as did Hrothulf son of Hygelac he shows a gesture of loyalty by supporting Hygleacs son, proving himself worthy once more. In the end each hero is left with a dark shadow cast upon them, Beowulf for dying and leaving his people unprotected, and Gawain keeping the girdle which he wears daily as a constant reminder of his shame. Sir Gawain prided himself on observing the five points of chivalry, his people looked up to him because he looked to this code in all that he did. follow perfectly the values and demeanor set up by the Germanic heroic code, including loyalty, courtesy, and pride. The down fall of Sir Gawain and Beowulf came doing what they are mostly honored for, defending their land. Even with Gawain's fear of what he has agreed upon he does not allow it to stop him, and with his desire to keep the good name of Arthur's house, along with his integrity he ventures off to receive his return hit from the Green Knight. Unknown to Gawain he has developed a reputation for being a great knight and a very respectable lover. Beowulf was looked up to by the Geats because he was a loyal leader as well as defender, a trait that was priceless in this day. Sir Gawain the most modest of all the knights see himself as inferior to the court describing himself as the least of Arthur's knights both physically and mentally. His growth is explored through two phases of life, his youthful valor as will as his mature heroism as a reliable king. Sir Gawain and Beowulf were both highly recognized men who were prided on their braveness, and values. When he defeats Grendel and Grendel's mother this is what truly establishes him as being a hero, causing his reputation to be held in a much more respected fashion, other than the thought of him having a large ego to satisfy. Gawain is one who stands by his commitments even if it means putting his own life in danger, as he did when he took on the Green Knight in the hall.
