Analysis of Duchess

That is my last wife painted on the wall and she looks as if she was alive. That is a good painting by Fra Pandolf. I especially like the glance of my wife that I killed. Finally, she gives only me her passionate glance. I even can hide her glance behind the curtain so that nobody sees it but me. I was extremely jealous when her glance was not always intended for me, and therefore I killed her. She was even impressed by some guy who got her cherries from the orchard. She didn't always pay her attention only to me. When I started giving her commands, she did not smile at me anymore. That was enough, so I killed her. But now, I can have her smile and eyes myself. Now, I want to go and look at other art by Claus of Innsbruck.
Speaker: A duke of Ferrara who killed his wife.
Speaker's Purpose: To tell the readers that it was his wife's fault he murdered her.
This poem does not any shifts. The speaker describes his wife and his motives for killing her throughout the poem. This poem has a lyrical structure. The author wrote this poem in a monologue structure. He did this to emphasize his want to monopolize his wife's actions. The speaker also relates the entire poem as if to another person present with him, since he addresses the other person with comments like: "Wil't please you rise?"
Tone: The speaker has a mysterious tone throughout the novel. He tells his motives for killing his wife, but does not state directly that he killed her. The speaker also has a nervous tone throughout the poem, especially when he talks about the death of his wife.
The curtain symbolizes that now the duke can have the duchess all for himself. The purpose of the curtain also gives the speaker a jealous trait.
Daylight in the West symbolizes the end of the duchess' life and gives the poem a mysterious tone.
