Our Country;s Good - Plot

* Scene one: The Voyage out- the scene opens on a convict ship, which is on its way to Australia. There are many convicts huddled close together in the cold. The character Sideway is being hit and the character Ralph Clark is counting the lashes. After he has finished his beatings, Sideway is chucked down with the other convicts. A few of the characters discuss how they feel and how hungry they are (these characters are Mary, Wisehammer and Arscott.* Scene two: An aboriginal Australian enters and describes the first ever fleet of convicts coming to Australia. He also says that he sees the ship as 'a dream that has lost its way, describing it as if it's coming from the sky.* Scene three: Punishment- This scene opens with Phillip, Collins, Tench and Brewer all shooting birds, and at the same time, discussing the punishment of hanging. Each character expresses different thoughts on the matter, and this tells the audience quickly a lot about them. * Scene four: The Loneliness of Men- Ralph is in his tent, and is reciting his diary to his wife in England. This diary entry tells us a lot about the character Ralph, and tells us how much he hates the convicts. He also desperately wants a promotion. Then enters Harry Brewer, and we l


* Scene 6: The Authorities discuss the merits of the theatre- Phillip, Collins, Tench, Ross, Campbell, Johnson, Johnston, Daves, Clark and Faddy. Then, Duckling expresses her feelings, which are that she feels she needs to have more freedom, and Harry and her decide it would be best if she joined the play. Caesar has gone missing, due to stage freight, but is brought back by Arscott who threatens him with dire consequences if he fails to go on stage and perform. There is great tension between Dabby and Liz, but it is broken when Ketch (the hangman) appears. * Scene Seven: The meaning of Plays- Ralph tries to go through with a rehearsal, but Ralph and Wisehammer are in competition over Mary Brenham. They rehearse their bow, and Dabby decides she is going to escape back to Devon after the play. Sideway, Duckling and Mary enter to rehearse the play. * Scene Five: The Second Rehearsal- Instructed to do so, Campbell brings the prisoners on to rehearse the play with Ralph, Mary, Dabby and Sideway. Then the cast are opened out onto the scene, and we see that they are getting ready for their performance of the play. All of the officers express there thoughts on the convicts being in the play. * Scene Six: The science of hanging- The scene opens with Ketch trying to measure Liz for hanging, and has trouble because Liz refuses to even stand up. * Scene 7: Harry and Duckling go rowing- The scene starts with the characters Harry and Duckling rowing in a boat. * Scene Two: His Excellency Exhorts Ralph- Ralph tells the Governor that he wants to stop the play because half of his cast are in chains; however the Governor says he wants the play to succeed, and Ralph, at the end of the scene, decides to continue with the play. They have all been drinking, and they are all debating the play.
