A small mistake
Do you know more than one language? If you do, have you ever found yourself starting a sentence in one language and ending it with another? As a young girl, I used to mix my languages. Naturally, I did this while learning the English language. I applied the rules of the Spanish language with the rules of the English language and ended up speaking both at the same time. I was born in Chicago, IL, where the Hispanic population is very large. Hispanic people do not really need to know English in order to make a living. I was attending a public school where bilingual classes were offered. Here, I spoke Spanish and did all my math, science, and social studies work in this language. English takes about 30 minutes of your eight-hour day. We learned how to say chair, table, and other common words. I clearly remember one day, I was playing with my cousin in my sister's room. There, my cousin started jumping up and down on my sister's bed and knocked down my sister's frame. The frame cracked and the glass broke. My whole family came running in and asked, "Who did this?" My cousin pointed directly at me and said, "She did it!" I desperately wanted to yell out she was a liar and tell my sister my cousin had broken t
Who ever knew that a small accident would cause such a difference in someone's life? My family didn't realize that the day my cousin knocked down the frame was the day my life would make a drastic change. I spoke Englisheverywhere so that I could practice it. That broken frame was the first step to my new life- a life of hopes and dreams. I finally got my point across and she corrected me. Now, to this day, I truly thank them for their innocent sarcasm. My mom and dad only have second grade education and no one in my entire family; including cousins, aunts, and uncles on both my parent's side has had honors classes. No one realized that this situation was the turning point of my life. I went through extremely embarrassing moments because of the silly mistakes I would make. If I would never have learned English, I believe my life would have been different. When I first saw the word "Llama," I read it as "Y-a-m-a. The students would make so much fun of my bizarre accent. For example, an advantage would be communication by reading, writing, and speaking. I went through stressful times because I did not know English.
