Western separatism
Since Confederation over one hundred years ago, the Central andEastern Regional Governments have exploited the entire area west of theOntario/Manitoba border, both economically and politically. They alsomade it impossible for western Canadians to reach a point where theywould have any opinion in determining their own political and economicwell-being. The previous government had continued to ignore the weakineffective voice of western Canada. Because of this, many people askedthemselves, should the west separate from Canada? Is a province allowed to separate from Canada? The Supreme Courtand the Parliament of Canada both said that it is legally attainable. Allthat is required is a clear referendum question, a clear majority andpolitical will. The separation of the west would have included Manitoba,Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. If separation would have occurred, British Columbia andAlberta would have been able to form new countries. There are many reasons why the west wanted to separate fromCanada. One of the reasons is taxes. Why were the taxes so high? "Tofatten the parasite of Ottawa which eats up good men, turning their
"2 There were also political reasons as to why the west wanted toseparate from Canada. These reasons and many more are why the westshould have separated from the east. Tochange this, and to share power would require their consent; thereforebeneficial decisions for Ontario and Quebec are inevitable andpermanent"8 There are many reasons why western Canada should haveseparated. There would have also been benefits to the west for separating. Culture isthe essence of a nation. "It is going to take realdedication to independence for it to be achieved, but it is only throughindependence that our fishery, forestry, mining, agriculture and otherresources will be free of the exploitation of Central Canada. British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan werethe only three provinces in Canada who continually produced moreforeign exports than they receive foreign imports. Ontario and Quebec held almost two-thirds of theseats in the House of Commons so therefore they were able the electgovernment. "1 Transportation policies have ensured that it would cost more to shipfrom the west to east than from the east to west, so that a westernmanufacturer would not be able to compete with an easternmanufacturer, because of high shipping costs. "Separation is really the only solution other than surrender forever to thepolitical dictates of Ontario and Quebec"3 Another major reason why independence was necessary was foreconomic purpose. This government which destroys freedom in thename of security eats up prosperity in the name of Canadians ownershipand takes the resources of the west mercilessly to support their Bay StreetBanking towers. Political power, concentrated as it wasin Quebec and Ontario, would never be voluntarily surrendered. With western Canada'srelatively small population, geographic isolation and the lack ofpoliticians, they have no voice, no representation, and certainly no choice. "5 Cultural reasons were also why separation was desired. Fromconception to natural death, human like should be regarded as sacred andtreated with respect.
