A Dolls House

The classic play "A Doll House" seems to have an overall theme that a women's place is in the home taking care of the children while, the husband's job is to work and provide for the entire family. The play sets the stage in Nora and Torvald's home at Christmas time. Since Christmas is seen by some as a materialistic holiday, the time period helps with Nora's character as a materialistic person. She enjoys spending money and likes buying things for the children.Throughout the first act, Torvald inadvertently shares his feeling of a women's place in the home (i.e., as a good wife and mother). Nora finds out their long-time family friend, Dr. Since Torvald doesn't believe in borrowing, Nora lies to Torvald about the money she borrowed for their trip to Italy to help Torvald recover from an illness. But, before he does, Nora relieves her lie, Norvald basically denounces her as his wife and the mother of their children.
