A Dolls House

             The classic play "A Doll House" seems to have an overall theme that a women's place is in the home taking care of the children while, the husband's job is to work and provide for the entire family. The play sets the stage in Nora and Torvald's home at Christmas time. Since Christmas is seen by some as a materialistic holiday, the time period helps with Nora's character as a materialistic person. She enjoys spending money and likes buying things for the children.
             Throughout the first act, Torvald inadvertently shares his feeling of a women's place in the home (i.e., as a good wife and mother). This is present in the pet names that he calls her (e.g., little songbird and little women) and his overall attitude towards her. He seems to treat her like a child.
             Nora appears to be respectful of Torvald and his role as her husband, but at the same time, she appears to rebel against him a little. For example, she hides eating macaroons from Torvald, who doesn't want her eating them.
             Since Torvald doesn't believe in borrowing, Nora lies to Torvald about the money she borrowed for their trip to Italy to help Torvald recover from an illness. She told Torvald that she borrowed the money from her father but, she borrowed it from Krogstad who later holds it over her head to help keep his job.
             Nora attempts to withhold her loan obligation from Torvald throughout the entire play. Krogstad, an employee at the bank in which Torvald is the manager of, is going to be fired by Torvald because Torvald doesn't like him or his kind (i.e., he has a criminal past).
             Nora, is in debt to Krogstad for the loan and Krogstad threatens to tell Torvald about the loan if Nora can't convince Torvald to keep Krogstad's job at the bank.
