Hawaii maintains it’s status as a “national leader” in the production of high-grade marijuana. “Of highschool students in Hawaii 40 percent reported in the 1999 Hawaii Youth Risk Behavior Survey that they have had sexual intercourse, with 26 percent being sexual in the last 3 months”(Henshaw, 2002).

Family planning clinics in Hawaii serve 7,900 teenagers. Due to there low educational and skill levels, slim chance of marriage, and poor, if any support of nonresident fathers of the children, the young mothers face huge challenges in trying to provide for their children. Teenage pregnancy, along with care for the teen mother and her baby are also major problems for Hawaii. 15 percent are served by health departments, 7 percent by hospitals, 10 percent by planned parent hood, 35 percent by community health centers, and 34 percent are served by other agencies. The people of Hawaii are continuing to and have been working on making there islands a better and safer place to live and or visit.

Marijuana continues to be the most illicit drug, with 46 percent of the 12th graders reporting they had tried it.
