Home Networking
Creating a Network Without Rewiring In my opinion this article is a good guide for someone who doesn't know very much about networking. The author gives many wonderful examples of networks that are inexpensive as far as wring is concerned. Although there wasn't anywhere in the article that showed how much it would cost to buy all of the equipment and wires for a particular network installation. Not knowing the cost makes it difficult for a potential network builder to make a decision on what setup they will use because bottom line, money is always the main deciding factor. A positive point to this article is how many different options the author presents for a home or a small office network. The idea of using already existing line inside the walls is a great option that would make the installation a breeze and also save a fair amount of money. I'm sure for most people, the idea of using your power lines or your telephone lines to connect your computers is a new concept., it was for me. Another option the author presents is to use USB as your wire medium. USB is only practical if your computers are close to each other. I think the author should have omitted this network setup, it's not as practi
There is also the noise on you line when you use power line to transfer data over that will cause errors in your data transmission. Will the ability of transmitting through walls gives me many options as far as what rooms I would like to install a computer and also the ability to move a laptop from room-to-room if I feel the need. Security is always a concern for users of computers. We use computers to buys products from websites, we use them to keep track of our fiancees, we write and save journals on our computers, the need for security is a must in a network. Between wireless and non wireless, good ol' cables can create a closed network much easier. Of the four different setups discussed, the three that use wires are more secure than wireless. There are enough problems with computers as is. Building a network in my home using the telephone jack approach is also not feasible in my 50 year old home. After taking catalogue of the rooms with a telephone jacks, I am limited to three rooms, and one of them is my kitchen. Being so popular, there will be a lot of information easily found on the internet to help you build this type of network. The house I live in was built a long time ago, approximately 50 years. With wireless, you can roam from room to room with your laptop if you have one. Unfortunately, wirelesses major drawback is its security risks.
