Management trends

             Management has gone through many changes, and with the explosion of technology, many more are to come. At one time, the management styles that most companies used was that of "top down" management, which incorporated the use of a few managers to oversee many employees. There was not a discussion about how to accomplish a task; the employee was there only to take direction. The average worker was not encouraged to think or have ideas. Teams were not heard of, and very often most employees stayed in the same job until they retired. During the last decade organizations took on a whole new look. The economy was booming and money was abundant. Companies decided that their employees should help lead the way to higher profits. Much of this thinking was learned from the Japanese. As Quentin Skrabec notes, "American management took thousands of one-week fact-finding tours of Japanese industry Cause-and-effect analysis lost out to anecdotal spurious relationships. Japanese style was assumed to be the secret. Flat organizations, statistical process control, quality teams, team management, and kaizen were the rage." The idea of teams of employees running companies, as opposed to mid level managers, was outrageous. Yet, no one could argue with the success of the Japanese. The American auto industry was the first to flatten the management scheme and offer profit sharing and employee bonuses for new innovations; the Federal government was soon to follow.
             Over the last decade, teams of workers that report directly to upper management have replaced many mid-level managers. With the advent of email and project management software, communication has reached a whole new level. In the past it would take days to set up a meeting or contact someone by phone.
