             Give an analysis of the short story "The Country of the Blind" (1904) by H.G.Wells.
             In H.G.Wells‘ short story, "The Country of the Blind" (1904), the main character is a hero, a victim, an imperialist and an idealist– all in one. When you read the text, new aspects of Nunez‘ character appears as the action unfolds – and they are not all to his advantage.
             Nunez is a mountaneer who accidentally drops from the mountain and down into the isolated and otherwise inaccessible valley, the country of the blind. 15 generations before the time of the story, an earthquake cut off the valley from the rest of the world. The blind people are the descendants of a group of settlers in this fertile valley, who were struck by a disease which eventually left them all blind and, in the end, completely eyeless.
             When Nunez appears in the valley, he immediately realizes that his eyesight gives him a fantastic advantage and expects everyone to be amazed and awed at his abilities. However, the blind life of the blind people have developed to perfection and no matter what Nunez tries, it turns out either a defeat or just utterly useless: what is the point of eyes if they cannot see through walls anyway?
             Nunez‘s biggest problem, however, is to pursuade the blind people that "sight" actually exists and that he himself is a rational creature in his own right. Through the generations, the blind people have developed their own, blind, understanding of the world – "saner explanations". Since they are cutt off from everything else, it is logical for them that there is nothing in the world but the valley which to them is like a giant pot with a lid ("smooth to the touch") which explains rain: nothing but condensation!
