Abomination
Account of live performance: AbominationOn Friday 24th, I watched a production of the book 'Abomination' in the school assembly room at Bitterne Park School. To perform the play 'abomination' I thought the actors and actresses would have to be good as I had heard from friends that the story and the way the book was written was very complex. As I expected the one actor and two actresses preformed the play very well. The way each character was able to jump roles and change from character to character changing their status from high to low show that their acting skills were very effective. The way that performers were able to jump roles so easily made the play much more believable and maybe even more so than if the performance had had more actors and actresses (this I think, would have made the performance dull and confusing). When I first sat down to watch the play one of the first things my eyes were drawn to was the fact that where they were performing there were no props (except the phone, the computer, rope swing and the post cards, which were necessary for the play to work). This instantly made it different to other plays (for example, Pantomimes which uses many different types of props and even if a prop is not really n
As I sat down to watch the play another thing I noticed was the set, it was a large metal cube with four different levels within, this was unusual as other plays tend to have a back board or screen for which costumes and props can be stored behind. Where the set was plain (much like the costumes) it drew your eyes away and focused them on the characters. But as the play progressed I thought they were very much needed as they added tension and often changed the mood of the play. We see that Anne wears her cloths so that they cover u all of her skin (top button done up, a long skirt and sleeves down to her wrists) this is very much how people acted in Victorian times, it shows the beliefs of her parents. The use of space in the performance was excellent, they used whatever space was available, this therefore made it more clear about what was happening. Overall I thought the set, the minimal amount of props, the sound effects and the characters were all very believable. I also noticed that the interior was in the shape of a cross, this could symbolise the fact that the mother and father are very religious and is there to remind Anne that is she does anything wrong God will punish her. I would also use a little more lighting, for example blackouts when a scene has ended, this would make some scenes more clear, and could symbolise their feelings and emotions, whereas it could also show pace and movement. But in the play you can understand why 'Raggedy Anne' did not tell anyone her father was beating her because she was worried about getting him into trouble. However we also see the father stood on a raised level, and because he does this he becomes more dominant and over powering, making his status high and making Anne's smaller. The director effectively used the space available on the set, as none of the performers ever stood in huddles but used the space there was and really made you believe that you were watching them in the kitchen, outside or even in a classroom with a lot of pupils. They were able to change their voices to suit the character, for example the father, who was loud and had a very open powerhouse, whereas his other character, Scott, was to begin with very quiet and kept himself to himself, giving him a closed powerhouse, a complete contrast to his other character. When I first heard some of the sound effects in use, for example: the baby crying, I thought it was too loud and unnecessary especially as the actor and actresses were able to create such great mime acts and such believable characters, to be let down by the sound. The costumes used by the performers were plain (black trousers and white shirts) but very successful. When it had finished the messages were clearly given across and I believe it really made the audience think about the play for days after.
