Gay Marriages

If anyone takes a stance against gay marriage, or their lifestyle; does that make them a bigot, sexist, homophobic, browbeater, or one who persecutes with their own religion? I think so. Instead of making the effort to love and accept people who are different from themselves, these people have chosen to browbeat and persecute with their own religion. They claim the communal dimension is virtually nonexistent when it comes to same-sex relationships; that such relationships should never be deemed equivalent to, or even an alternative to marriage. Activist say same-sex relationships are static, self-focused, and center almost exclusively on what the relationship delivers for the two partners, not what it represents to the supportive families or the society.

Gay families have arrived in suburban America, in small town America, in Bible belt America, and in all corners of the country. There are now more than 160,000 families with two gay parents and roughly a quarter of a million children spread across 96% of the U.S. counties. That’s not counting the kids being raised by single gay parents, because such households aren’t tracked. It’s no coincidence that in 200 years of American history, there have only been 16 Constitutional Amendments. Bush’s call to codify discrimination into the Constitution seems to have turned off the majority of Americans, regardless of their sexual orientation or even their political beliefs about same-sex marriages. The number of male couples raising children in 2000 jumped from 1 in 20 to 1 in 5 during the same period. However, one study cited by both supporters and opponents of gay parenting found that children of lesbians are more likely to consider homosexual relationships; but, no more likely to identify themselves as homosexuals in adulthood.

I believe we are the land of the free, free to love and marry the person of our choice, free to live and raise our children without discrimination. The call to amend the Constitution for such a blatant act of discrimination makes most Americans uneasy; even people who would say they are opposed to gay and lesbian marriages. Many traditional-marriage advocates argue that marriage is first and foremost about procreation. Bush’s timing could be classified as a freak of nature. Not a single study has found a difference between children of gay and straight parents that you can construe as harmful. Bush’s call to cut gays out of their Constitutional right will turn out to be a defining issue of the presidential campaign; although, it could turn out to be something much more important in the long era of history. What’s important is the perception; few Americans like to think of themselves as unfair-minded bigots who would set discrimination in stone. Whether or not any of that is true is another question; whether or not it is true matters little.
