When Fitzgerald was a little boy, he lived in a house with his family that was one block down from the richest people in the city. Throughout his whole life, Fitzgerald wanted to move down that one block to live with and be accepted by the rich. In his novel The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses symbolism, point of view, prosperity, and character to reveal this theme: a man's discovery of how he cannot save time and live in the past. Fitzgerald uses two major pieces of symbolism to reveal his theme. The first, was when Gatsby reached out for the light at the end of Daisy's dock across the bay. "He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and far as I was from him I could of sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward - and distinguished nothing except for a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock" (Fitzgerald 25). Gatsby is trying to reach his ultimate dream, which is living in the past with Daisy as it was before he went off to war. He is reaching for infinite dreams and never ending possibilities. "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that ye

his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. "The rich get richer and the poor get - children" (95). This second symbol is illustrated by Gatsby catching the clock as if to catch time and save it in order to put it where he thinks it belongs. An essential part of this novel is point of view. All of the characters in the novel tell him everything. I picked him for a bootlegger the first time I saw him and I wasn't far wrong" (141). "Gatsby's wonder when he first picked out the green light at the end of Daisy's dock. Changing the view can alter the whole story. It eluded us then, but that's no matter - tomorrow we will run faster stretch out our arms farther. Scott Fitzgerald shows his theme easily through using symbolism, point of view, prosperity, and character.
