Full Metal Jacket Film Review
Directed by Stanley Kubrick, Full Metal Jacket stars Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin, R. Lee Ermey, Ed O'Ross, and Arliss Howard. The movie is divided into two distinct parts, one section being in boot camp at Parris Island, and the second part being in the Vietnam War during the Tet Offensive. The main characters are Private "Joker," Private "Pile, Private "Cowboy," and a very degr
The soldiers must find a Samadhi during battle or else they can be distracted and will be killed. There are close-ups during this scene as well as very long shadows symbolizing the dark side of the military. The film does a fantastic job of portraying the tough life of training for the Marines. Private "Pile" goes through satori from mild mannered to psychotic and suicidal. The film then fades into the second part in Vietnam. The drill sergeant comes in yelling and Private "Pile" shoots him and then sits down on the toilet and shots himself in the mouth. The scene we chose to review in class was the scene at the very end of the part in Parris Island where Joker pulled fire watch and finds Pile in the head with his gun and a sadistic grin on his face. His muse is the drill sergeant and the way of life in the Marines. Private "Joker" and "Rafterman" are paired together as a journalist and a photographer. He then proceeds to sounds off a rifle "prayer" and wakes up the entire platoon. The director utilizes eye level shots during this scene which help put the focus on the dialogue.
