The drama and theatre we see now is far more diverse than what we have seen in the first part of the century, this is the result of Australia becoming a much more complex society. Drama and theatre has always represented the social and cultural issues and interests of the time it was performed and composed in, and this is reflected through the Australian drama and theatre we see now in the contemporary society. As our society has become more complex so has the dramatic forms and styles to deal with these new realties, this is evident in the two contemporary Australian plays, "Gary's House" written by Deborah Oswald, and "The 7 stages of grieving" by Wesley Enoch and Deborah Mailman, both of these text look at the issues relevant to today such as discrimination and both texts have used diverse dramatic styles and techniques such as the use of humour in non-comical situations. The use of such performance styles and issues create drama that is far more diverse as they are used to respond to the complex contemporary society we now live in.
             Discrimination is a major issue and is very much a part of our complex society, Australian's far too often judge and discriminate against people because of their socio-economic status and race and this is an issue that is now being raised in drama and theatre, making it far more diverse. This is evident in the text "Gary's House", which is based on typical Aussie battlers, people who are so often discriminated against, the underclass of suffering but resilient people thrown back on their own resources by a new society that sacrifices human lives for the sake of sound management and efficient social control. An example of this in the text is at Act 1 Scene 8 where Christine criticises Gary for "having a go" at setting up a family of his own, "Do what? Some pathetic idea you've got about living", "be realistic for once in your b...
