To Kill a Mockingbird

             I read To Kill A Mockingbird because I liked the movie. Jem and Scout had a Negro cook, Calpurnia, who taught them not to be prejudice. There father, Atticus Finch was very smart and played with them and read them stories. Scout learned to read before she entered school.
             One summer Scout and Jem became fascinated with the Radley house next door. Most of the people in town thought the house was haunted. Most of the children were scared to walk in front of the Radley house. If a ball rolled into the Radley's yard they were too scared to get it. Scout and Jem would run when they passed the house. Nathan Radley was "the meanest man ever god blew breath into," according to Calpurnia. Boo Radley, Nathan's younger brother had not been seen in the past twenty years. People believed he got into trouble and was being held prisoner in the house.
             Scout and Jem tried to get a glimpse of Boo all summer, but they never saw him. Once Jem's lost, torn pants were mysteriously mended and returned. Once, the Finch's house had a fire, Scout was really cold, and found a blanket thrust upon her. Scout's father told her that it was Boo Radley who put the blanket around her. Through out the next year objects would appear in the knothole in the tree on the Radley property. The gifts were for scout and Jem from Boo.
             Atticus was appointed as the attorney for Tom Robinson, a Negro accused of raping a white girl. The town's people were mad that Atticus really did defend Tom. Atticus and his children were threatened. Atticus believed Tom was innocent, and tried to prove it. The town's people called scouts father a "nigger-lover." The day the trial began, the Maycomb courthouse was packed. The sheriff testified that Mayella, the girl who was raped, claimed that Tom Robinson beat her up and gave her a black eye on her right eye. The sheriff said
