Homosexuality
Leading a normal life as a homosexual in this modern day comes with many problems. These problems start early in life and vary from personal issues to social issues. As a small child in a small town I learned at an early age that homosexuality wasn't really accepted or thought to be anything close to normal. I can remember at an early age at elementary school kids on the playground using words like "faggot" or "queer" to torment other children. Being a young boy, I perceived that they were using these words as an insult maybe suggesting that being gay made you a freak, or that there was something wrong with you. I began to learn very early in life that there was something that separated me from the other kids and because of that I may face problems. In Jr. High I rode the bus with a guy who for years and years was constantly tormented and badgered because he dressed and talked differently. Because he chose to dress differently and talked in a slightly different tone of voice all the kids assumed he was gay. Automatically after the kids made the assumption that he was gay they began tormenting him on a daily basis on the bus trip to and from school. The kids had a hay-day with his emotions and feeling and harassed him so
My performance, rifle skills, and my combined run and physical fitness scores are a prime example that this is not true. They assume a homosexual wouldn't be able to meet the expectations that a heterosexual has to meet. Perhaps the saddest thing for a gay or lesbian person is that they live in fear their entire life. I acquired a maximum score on the military's physical fitness test more than any other person in my platoon for well over a year and had the fastest two mile run time about four out of the five days we did physical fitness. One common stereotype that I hear from people is that all gay men are feminine and posses feminine qualities similar to that of a woman. I personally think that saying "some" homosexuals are this way is valid but for the most part this is something that straight heterosexuals possess as well par. Therefore, same sex couples are denied the same benefits that heterosexual couples receive. The military assumes that gays are not man enough to serve their country. Life itself is a challenge and becomes that much more challenging when heterosexual children are taught at a young age to respond negatively toward homosexuals. One thing that makes it hard for someone who is gay to come out and be open about there sexuality is family. This can cause a person a lot of grief. Some of the other common stereotypes that I often hear are that all gays are infected with HIV. You have to wonder whether your family will accept your sexuality and ways of life. Often times, families can disagree which causes a lot problems and in some cases even lead to complete disownment. Therefore, they feel comfortable rattling jokes off and making comments around me.
