DBQ: The Era of Good Feelings

             Introduction: Although Americans won their freedom and responsibility to control their nation, the variable of success was still to be earned. Success in not earned easily, especially when it symbolizes the accomplishment of creating a new order in 13 colonies. Building a new nation created not only positive but also negative aspects for American citizens.
             Monroe created a positive outlook on the future of the nation when he was elected into office in 1816. An atmosphere of "good feelings" emerged when he began to get involved with military defenses. Although the early years of Monroe's period were blessed with the satisfaction of numerous Americans, other factors began to affect their comfortable lifestyles. Other than the convenience of the "transportation revolution" (B) the inconvenience of a tariff, a bank, internal improvements, and land affairs were slowly being disputed (A). Another important conflict, slavery, began to rise into question.
             The well accustomed peaceful lifestyle during Monroe's early presidency, extinguished by 1819. A financial panic spread throughout the colonies, and created mass hysteria. The panic consisted of an intense economic drop in the west, and distrust in the Bank of the United States (D). The Missouri Compromise of 1820 created the sectionalism of the North and South because of the idea of slavery. The Missouri Compromise not only highlighted the slave opinions of the North and the South, it also reserved the diverse ideas for a future "dispute" of the Union (F). Although Monroe caused these two major crises, he was reelected.
             Throughout the 1820s and 1830s the celebration of new innovative ideas began to take place.
