Iago : A Decietful Villian

William Sheakespeare's Iago is one of the most complex villians created by Shakespeare. At first glance, Iago's character seems to be pure evil. Iago is cruel but smart. To add more depth to Iago, Shakespeare gives him traits of being amoral, duplicitous, prideful, and of course being egocentric, instead of the typical immoral villian. Iago's entire scheme begins when Cassio is given the lieutenant postion, which Iago desired. Iago shows his insecurity by his need to be lieutenant, which reveals his own desire to reach a status that he needs to be comfortable. Iago is filled with envy and plots to steal the position he feels that he justly deserves, since he was not selected. You can begin to see that the motivation for Iago's skillful manipulations were revenge and anger. Iago's manipulations are driven by a basic desire to avenge those who hurt him but also to gain what he believes is rightly his, becoming lieutenant. Throughout the play, every character calls him "Honest Iago", but indeed he the most dishonest character in the story, although it must be stated that he is remarkably honest with himself. While characters in the play deny their own flaws, Iago realizes what they are

The most frightening characteristic of Iago is that he fools all the main characters so that he can reach his goal, becoming lieutenant and the downfall of Othello. Iago's brilliance lies within his ability to twist his words. This is all that Iago needs to get his ball rolling. Taken in context and delivered in a certain tone of voice, they are taken to be different thoughts and ideas. These facts lead to Iago's ultimate goal which is the death of Othello. When it is no longer to his advantage to do so, Iago will destroy Othello and his reputation beyond repair. William Shakespeare was known to do some great things in his lifetime and this ending was one of them. Shortly after murdering his wife, Othello finds out that there was never an affair between Desdemona and Cassio. The fact that they were talking dirty about Bianca lead Othello to believe that they were talking about Desdemona, which in turn made Othello very angry which made Iago's ball of lies roll much faster. Othello's jealousy overtakes him so much that it leads him to murdering his wife. I think that William Shakespeare's reasoning for changing the way that he ended this play, regarding Iago, was good for not only the play but also its readers. In conclusion, Iago is an interesting and fascinating character during the Shakespearean Era. Iago makes Othello jealous by telling him that his recently married wife, Desdemona is sleeping with another man, Micheal Cassio, Othello's newly appointed lieutenant.
