Ancient art covers a variety of different cultures, religions, and artworks. Most of what we know about the people of this time period comes from the studies of the archaeological remains, artifacts, and literature. From these studies we can gather that religion played a very important role in the societies of this time. The buildings of worship in Ancient Egypt and Greece vary in many ways while representing their culture's way of life. In the Egyptian culture religion embodied every aspect of their life. The Egyptian faith was based on an unorganized collection of ancient myths, nature, and numerous divine beings. Our text refers to their religious practices as magical. The temples in this culture symbolize the civilization that built them. Rituals were performed on alters outside the front of the temple. The next hall is very dark and only special priest are allowed to enter this part of the temple. To enter inside the temple one must be proven worthy and ready to acquire the higher knowledge and insights. The priests and priestesses and their attendants were the only ones to enter the temples. The naos or shrine built of wood is kept here. They had very strict rules and only the priests and pharaohs were allowed inside. Artists of this time evolved because they incorporated philosophical questioning. The sanctuary is the most sacred room in the temple. They greatly admired the human mind and the ability to reason. This hall is made to resemble a papyrus plant and the only light comes in from the window near the ceiling or clerestory. The Egyptian culture did not function like temples of other cultures where people are allowed in the temples and come and go as they please. The Greeks had a profound yearning for knowledge. They were made of stone, so that they would last forever. The temples of the Egyptian culture are an amazing architecture feat.
