Nationalism

             A region's history is affected by the amount of nationalism. It has especially affected history in the 19th and 20th centuries. Nationalism has both unified and divided India, Germany and Israel/Palestine. In Germany ideas of the Hitler Youth and holocaust both unified and divided the nation. In India, nationalism overall was a positive for the nation. It eventually helped India to become an independent nation. Israel and Palestine on the other hand had a negative impact of nationalism in how it created problems and tensions in the nations. In any case, nationalism can unite or divide a nation.
             Germany has had extreme nationalism over the 19th and 20th century. Rivalries because of nationalism started as far back as World War One. During World War Two German children joined Hitler Youth, which brought German nationalism to a significant high. Then it was destroyed with the genocide of all the Jews in the Holocaust. In two centuries, and over the course of two wars, German nationalism went from a high to low.
             By the end of the 19th century nationalism was at a high in India. In 1919, the Amritsar Massacre sent nationalism to a low when 400 innocent Indians were killed. Then, in 1930 Gandhi lead the Salt March to protest British control of salt. That had a major impact on nationalism and raised it again. Nationalism was positive for India because it helped it to become an independent nation.
             Starting back in the B.C.'s Israel and Palestine has had different nationalistic views. Both countries claimed Jerusalem as their holy city thousands of years ago. In 1910, the nationalist clashes officially began between the Jews and Palestinians. Then in 1964 the Palestinian Liberation Organization was formed against Israeli. Nationalism created many tensions in the Israeli/Palestine conflict.
